    “The Pittman Way” – DVD program about Hortence Pittman, long time hybridizer

    of African Violets. Program includes interviews about her hybridizing program,

    pictures of her plants and an interview with her husband Ray, about hybridizing

    Streptocarpus, African Violet cousins.

​    The Botany and History of Holiday Desserts
    Lecture by Dorothy Smullen

    Do you know what is in your fruit cake, mince pie and plum pudding? You’ll enjoy

    learning the history and understanding the botany of these traditional holiday

    desserts. Recipes will most definitely be included with Dorothy’s talk.

    Free to members, but registration is required.

​    Sprouts - Animal, Vegetable, Mineral
   Young scientists will decide what is alive and what is not and learn how they have

    a lot in common with plants – another living thing.
    Plant the seeds for a love of nature in Sprouts. In these programs, preschoolers

    ages 2-4 and their adult caregivers will discover the wonders of nature. Each

    session features a different theme based on what is growing in the gardens. Each

    session includes a story time, a hands-on activity based on the theme, and an

    outdoor exploration of the arboretum. Dress for the weather! 
    Pre-registration preferred; walk-ins welcome.

    Cost: $5 per child

​    Cooking Demonstration: Winter Food to Warm Your Heart and Hearth
    It’s cold outside and the gardens are covered in snow, but the best way to take

    away the chill is to cook food that is comforting and delicious.
    Spend a winter afternoon with chef Cynthia Triolo learning new recipes that make

    your kitchen the heart of your home.
    Registration required by January 21 for purchase of supplies.
